France's 'gentleman rocker' Bashung laid to rest

PARIS (AFP) — French music superstar Alain Bashung, who on his death last weekend at the age of 61 was described as "a prince" by President Nicolas Sarkozy, is to be buried on Friday, his production company said.

Though little known outside of France, Bashung has grabbed print and media headlines since his demise from lung cancer Saturday, with critics dubbing him the greatest artist of French song since Serge Gainsbourg.

A religious service is to be held at the left-bank Saint-Germain-des-Pres church in the morning ahead of his burial at Paris' Pere Lachaise cemetery.

Since 1966, Bashung spent his career singing and composing a poetic pop-chanson repertoire, recording several hits and becoming the most awarded artist in the history of France's Victoires music awards.

Only last month, emaciated from illness he sang at the annual awards ceremony where he scooped three Victoires for best male artist, best album for "Bleu Petrole" and best live show.
