Calvin Johnson is a guitarist, vocalist and founding member of the bands Beat Happening, The Go Team, Dub Narcotic Sound System, and The Halo Benders. Johnson is also the founder of K Records in his home town of Olympia, Washington. His solo performances range from quiet acoustic pieces about love and loss to jazzier compositions. Tender Forever a.k.a. Melanie Valera, from Bordeaux, France makes delicate, lo-fi pop ballads in the spirit of “softcore” punk predecessors the Softies. Hotness is a Pittsburgh solo act in which a pink-clad Clinton Doggett dances, sings and bangs pots and pans to blissful techno-pop.

SILENT | LISTEN A performance by Ultra-Red Presented in conjunction with World AIDS Day

Free
ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) claimed “Silence=Death.” The Brazilian thinker Paulo Freire said, “Silence is the condition for listening.” These two contradictory understandings of silence set the stage for SILENT|LISTEN at The Warhol, the latest project by L.A.-based activist and sound art organization, Ultra-red. As sound artists whose practice centers on audio recordings of public spaces, Ultra-red have begun building a record of AIDS in North America. SILENT|LISTEN invites local AIDS activists, service providers, people living with HIV/AIDS and the Pittsburgh community to record their memories, and their desires for ending the epidemic. Facilitated by Ultra-red, the evening will begin with a performance of John Cage’s notorious composition, 4’33” followed by an open discussion that explores the questions: Where has the AIDS crisis been in the past? Where is it now? Where is it going in the future?
Relates to the current retrospective exhibition of the work of General Idea.
